NAIOP Southern Nevada, Communities in Schools Partner to Provide Health Care to In-need Students
NAIOP Casey Jones Health Center to Break Ground Oct. 22;
Facility Expected to Serve 5,000 In-need students
Communities In Schools of Nevada is an affiliate of Communities in Schools, the nation’s largest dropout prevention organization, and NAIOP Southern Nevada broke ground on the NAIOP Casey Jones Health Center Oct. 22 at Elaine Wynn Elementary School, which will offer basic medical care to in-need students in the surrounding area.
Projected to serve as many as 5,000 students ages 18 and under, the new 1,230-square-foot, $250,000 health center will cater to low-income and homeless children who do not otherwise have access to important medical and dental services. Similar to other local clinics previously launched by CIS, the new center aims to keep children in school by addressing distractions in their lives that interfere with their academic performance, preventing their disengagement from school.
NAIOP Southern Nevada, a chapter of NAIOP, the Commercial Real Estate Development Association, is financing and building the new facility and will oversee the design and construction. Funds for the new center were donated by the chapter and NAIOP members including several construction partners who are donating services including Wright Engineering, Pugsley Simpson Coulter Architects and the Slater Hanifan Group, which provided architectural design and engineering services. Crisci Builders is the general contractor. Martin-Harris Construction is the owner’s agent.
The newest health clinic will be named after Casey Jones, a past president and board member of NAIOP Southern Nevada who passed away in 2006. It was his consistent commitment to giving back to the community that encouraged NAIOP to enhance its outreach efforts.
“Casey Jones inspired our organization to make a difference,” said Lee Phelps, chapter president. “We are thrilled to commemorate his contribution with such a fantastic project that will make an impact on our community. Every time a child visits this clinic and receives much needed healthcare, we will know it is because of Casey. His legacy will continue for years to come.”
Upon opening, CIS will operate the center through operating support from the school district and a grant from United Way of Southern Nevada. CIS contracts with Clinics in Schools for the doctors and healthcare professionals including the medical clinic director, Dr. Noah Kohn. Clark County School District will coordinate plan checks and inspections, and will control future maintenance of the building.
Nevada remains above the national average in uninsured persons, and both national research and Nevada state studies show that uninsured children do not get the health care they need. Research also shows that children suffering from medical, dental and mental problems have an inability to concentrate on their schoolwork, decreased academic achievement, and increased disciplinary problems.
CIS has been able to respond to this crisis by establishing these medical clinics. A pilot program at Martinez Elementary established in 2007 aided more than 6,000 in-need students in its first year of operation, achieving:
A significant drop in the number of required parent-teacher conferences at Reynaldo Martinez Elementary School during the first six months of operation
A 1.7 percent improvement in reading proficiency scores for the year
A more than 12 percent improvement in Math proficiency scores
A reduction of 10 percent in the transient rate of Martinez Elementary School, to 65 percent.
